Let’s start with I have been coloring my hair since 2012. For the first 4 years I was bleaching my hair and curling my hair (2x a week) which lead to the cause of hair breakage. My hair wasn’t growing any longer and felt a lot thinner. Here are some 7 tips I recommend for beautiful and healthier hair!
1. Natural Organic Hair Shampoo and Conditioner
It wasn’t until my hair dresser recommended switching to an organic shampoo and conditioner. I started using Calia Natural (https://usa.calianatural.com/) in 2018. In a couple of months, my hair was healthy and growing long! When transitioning to a natural shampoo, your hair may feel oilier and heavier. Due to the years of build-up from hair products containing chemical ingredients will take time to remove. Sulfate shampoos strips off the natural oils. Overtime this will only leave your scalp itchy with dried hair. I started with Calia recommendation with purchasing a full set of 240 ML bottles to allow my hair to adjust.

2) Reducing Your Hair Wash
Washing my hair everyday made my hair oily within a couple of hours and my ends were super dry. When I started coloring my hair, I reduced it to twice a week. Considering how damaged my hair was, washing my hair was cut down to once a week. However, during summers because of the hot weather, I switch back to 2x a week.
These are some of the perks I experienced with washing my hair less
-
Spending less $$$ on shampoos and conditioners.
-
Hair color doesn’t fade easily.
-
Restore shine to your hair.
-
Your hair will becomes less oily.
Drying your hair:
Use a microfiber towel rather than a cotton towel as it will be a quicker process for drying your hair. This will reduce frizziness and because of less friction, this will help with preventing breakage.
3) Deep Conditioner
Especially for color treated and dry hair, I recommend using coconut oil. I’ve tried many deep conditioners and I find myself going back to this. Our hair is basically protein and coconut oil help prevent protein lost from chemical treatments and heat styling. You may deep condition once a week or every other week.
Instructions:
-
1 tbsp. organic unrefined (virgin) coconut oil (melted).
-
Massage the scalp to help produce more hair follicles.
-
Either leave it on for 30 minute or leave it over night then rinse out.
-
Shampoo two rounds to get rid of the coconut oil.
-
Optional: Use Apple Cider Vinegar rinse (please see below instructions on ACV rinse)
-
Condition as normal.
4) Wooden Brush Advantages & Organic Hair Oils
Wooden bristles massages the head while brushing. This improves circulation, oxygen, and blood flow. It also stimulates your scalp, which all these benefits leads to healthy hair growth.
I purchased my wooden brush from Calianatural.com. I’ve used TEK’s wooden brush for a couple years now, brushing my hair every morning and evening.
Organic Hair Oils
When it comes to hair oils, my personal favorite is Jojoba oil. It moisturizes my hair and keeps it shiny.
If you have very fine, straight hair it is best to invest in a wooden brush. Brushing helps with distributing your natural oils from your scalp to your ends.
5) Organic Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Helps with product build up that block the pores on your scalp. Also, prevents fungal and bacteria growth and keeps the hair and scalp healthy. It is anti-inflammatory and can help with dandruff and hair loss, since the underlying cause is often bacteria. Depending on how oily or dry your hair is, I do the rinse once a week. For oily hair, you are able to do this rinse once a week and once a month for dry hair.
Instructions:
-
Add 2 tablespoons (short hair) or 4 tablespoons (long hair) of ACV onto a glass and dilute it with water all the way.
-
Dip the ends of your hair into the glass and let sit for 1 minute.
-
Pour the rest of the rinse onto your scalp and hair. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
-
Wash out the rinse and I normally condition as usual.
6) Using Less Heat
The less heat the better! From curling my hair 1-2 times a week damaged my hair enormously. I started doing blowouts after washing my hair and it helped with cutting down the damage. Only for special occasions is when I curl my hair.
Important:
When using a heating tool, set the right temperature depending on hair type. Thin, fine hair is more prone to damage, therefore lower heat is recommended. Staying under 200 degrees Fahrenheit for thin, fine hair and for thicker hair, set temperature between 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit.
7) Adding Greens into Your Diet
I continued to add avocados, cilantro, and romaine lettuce as a side salad to most of my all meals. Having healthy hair and skin is also due to what we eat as we will benefit the nutrients we receive from fruits and vegetables.
